Jerry is the Director of the Information Technology Directorate and Chief Information Officer at NASA Ames Research Center located in the heart of Silicon Valley, California. Jerry’s primary mission is to provide thought leadership and technology solutions in support of NASA’s mission to answer mankind’s most pressing questions: How did we begin, are we alone and what is our future? In addition to his CIO role, Jerry also serves as the Program Executive for NASA’s global Security Operations Center. Previously, Jerry held the position as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Cyber Security at the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for NASA and the Director of Information Assurance for the Department of Education. Jerry held the distinction as the longest serving CISO in the federal government prior to his appointment to Ames. In his more than 20 years in the technology and security profession, Jerry has been a security consultant with several Fortune 500 management consulting firms and served as a Special Operations Program Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) within the National Clandestine Service. Jerry is also a Fellow with the Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology, a Washington, DC Think Tank. Jerry is a decorated Marine Corps combat veteran and holds a master’s degree in network security and has done doctoral studies in Information Systems. On three occasions, Jerry has been selected as one of the 50 most influential leaders in Technology and has also been selected as the federal government CISO of the Year, the North American Security Executive of the Year and the Turner Broadcasting System Cybersecurity Trailblazer.
